Time Flies When You're Having Fun

Why is it that the older I get, the faster time goes? Didn’t we just ring in 2021? We have basically lived this entire year in lockdown and now suddenly it is already the beginning of September and the kids are going back to school. AND 2022 will be here in 4 months! Maybe not everyone will agree with me but TIME IS FLYING BY. If you don’t know me, I keep myself busy. Sometimes too busy. There are days I set out to accomplish my list of to-dos and there literally isn’t enough time in a day to accomplish them. Which means something gets put on the back burner... yet again. You are likely sitting there thinking - Girl you just have terrible time management skills. I have always prided myself in my time management skills, but some days have got me second-guessing myself.
The MANY lockdowns we have had over the last year and a half have made me realize what I really enjoy in life. Sometimes my time management is so good that I manage to pack my day FULL of things that I don’t even enjoy. And this is the real flaw I have come to realize. I need to find joy in every day in whatever it is I am doing. And the things I find joy in may be very different from what you find joy in. I enjoy pushing myself to run a marathon, baking my own sweets, making quilts and sewing scrunchies for all my friends. I also enjoy watermelon margaritas by the poolside with friends and spending my winters at arenas across Ontario with my ringette family. But unfortunately, adulting has brought on cutting the lawn, doing the dishes, vacuuming the house and paying bills. These things I do not enjoy...but someone has got to do them! I know what you are all thinking, but my kind of salary can not afford me to have someone do them for me. And I may be a bit of a procrastinator...which I credit to my mom, so some days are filled with doing this shit. Although, I do feel very accomplished after completing this stuff. This means I then am free to really enjoy doing the things that I love and feel like I have earned that time!
Prioritize time for the things you love. What is important to you? Do you make an adequate amount of time for it? Or are you too busy surfing IG, binge-watching the latest series on Netflix and snacking on everything in sight? And then realizing that you wasted the entire day and you could have been catching up with an old friend, chipping away at DIY project that is still sitting in your garage or going to visit ‘that’ place that you keep saying you want to see. I like to ask myself, are you going to wake up 1% better tomorrow because of what you did today?
We get so busy and life does not have a pause button. So enjoy what you do and the people you surround yourself with. Life is too short to keep doing things you dislike. If it’s not serving you, re-evaluate its importance in your life. But you also can’t forget to do the dishes and clean the bathroom.
School may go back this week, but summer is not over. Let’s live it up through this nice weather and fade into Fall feeling good because we are doing what we love.
